-Conversation In The Wood-
“In every walk with nature,
One receives far more than he seeks.”
John Muir
We were walking in the northwood
When my dogs looked up and stared
Two large ravens were perched above
They cawed in unison and took to the air
It was as if my canines had understood them
All three dogs very eagerly followed their trail
Soon, these two ravens perched in another tree
And soon, I was reminded of a very ancient tale
In ancient Norse Mythology god Odin, father of Thor
Had two companion ravens, named Hugin and Munin
They were messengers, bringing him news of the world
He could understand their ancient language, and they, his
And, in many very ancient Native American stories and legends
Raven spoke and understood, both human and animal languages
As my canines now barked up at these two, and they cawed back
It was as if they were all now communicating, and I could only guess
This most fascinating pattern of fly and follow, then bark and caw
Went on for quite some time, and soon, I felt like the odd man out
When we finally got back to my truck, the two ravens took to wing
And my canines seemed to know something, of this I had no doubt
This lengthy conversation between ravens and dogs really intrigued me
The entire trip home, I kept asking my canines what the ravens had said
All three of them just kept grinning at me, and they've refused to divulge it
And now, I can’t get this conversation out of my mind, as I lie here in bed

This is such a very poignant and beautiful poem. I think animals do communicate with other species.
