I was out walking two of my lovable, old, rescued canines
A woman asked me if I watched The Westminster Dog Show
I responded that I rescue canine throw-aways, not breed them
So she walked off in a huff; she obviously didn’t want to know
She didn’t even give me the chance to brag about my rescued dogs
Or, to explain how so many dogs today, are cruelly being left behind
I would have told her that Westminster dropped Pedigree, as a Sponsor
Because they promote Adoption, instead of Purchasing the pure-bred kind
I admit that I’ve never been a fan of these pompous, pure-blood, dog affairs
In which wealthy people hire handlers and trainers, to showcase their canines
To me, these shows highlight and endorse the continued success of Puppy Mills
Where dogs are cruelly mass produced, in hopes of producing perfect blood lines
If she had stayed to listen, I would have also told her how they kill all ‘the imperfects’
How they so nonchalantly dump all ‘the undesirables’ with the wrong demeanor or gait
How people watch dog shows, and then rush out to buy a dog, for thousands of dollars
And when they tire of them, life on the streets, or in an overcrowded shelter, is their fate

shelter dogs make wonderful pet, so do throwaways, left behind and abandoned by malice, silliness or whatever other reason people have for mistreating their critters.
