As our politicians now hand more and more power
To foreign corporations, harvesting our coal and oil
Another American mountaintop, was just blown apart
Once beautifully majestic - blasted to bits, for its spoils
Mountaintop Removal Mining, is exactly what it sounds like
Explosives are utilized, to blow off the tops of our mountains
Rocks, soil, and debris cascade down into valleys and streams
Soon killing off everything below - bringing all life forms, to an end
Today, families living near mountaintop removal sites, often become ill
Because mercury and arsenic and other toxins, enter our water supplies
To date, nearly 3,000 American mountain ridges have been blown apart
Our ‘leaders’ now proclaim ‘Coal is Our Future!’ and very few question why
One day, our nation will awaken to a truly horrifying and abysmal sight
The very last remaining American mountaintop, will be flattened to dust
Only then, will many now begin to wonder why we allowed this to happen
Instead of politicians - in god-given beauty, we should have placed our trust

I scrubbed the greasy ash off my porch weekly from the clean burning power plants in the area and mourned the loss of greenery as I flew over miles of disrupted mountainside caused by heavy strip mining. I mourned for West Virginia then, and I mourn for more now. I mourn for Wyoming and the wilds of Canada being stripped for tar sands. But mountain topping is the worst of all.
What are we coming to as a nation if we can't turn our backs on monopoly money and create new technologies that don't have to destroy the earth?
Keep up the good fight, Ed. You know I will.
