Inspired by Annabel Sheila’s Poem,

‘Ode To Dandelions’

And by Jasmin Horst Seiler’s Poem,

‘Might You Speak, But Will You?’

“I’m wild again,

Beguiled again,

A child again.”

Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.

Each and Every Spring, these days

I watch my neighbors’ absolute horror

When they look out one warm morning

And spot Dandelions outside their door

Many make a mad dash for their toxic sprays

So many call in the ‘Agent Orange’ lawn guy

Some rush right outside to pluck them all out

I just shake my head, and I sadly wonder why

Dandelions, and just about everything else ‘wild’

Are always welcome all around my humble abode

And, all the wild creatures prefer my toxin free lawn

From squirrels and chipmunks, to bluejays and toads

I’d rather not have my canines romping in chemicals

Or playing fetch, on any toxic, herbicide laced, grass

My property has been designated a ‘Wildlife Habitat’

It’s a very small thing that I do, but I truly hope that it lasts

Perhaps I’ll be awakened by a squirrel, chattering for breakfast

Or, by some cawing crows, who hope I’ll toss them some bread

Or by an opossum heading back to her burrow with her little ones

Or by a red robin, who digs up worms in my yard, without any dread

Our nesting pair of doves always greet me with a lovely coo

The sparrows and the finches at my birdfeeder joyously sing

Going Wild, has made my remaining days, so much happier

Unlike my neighbors, I never fear what the next dawn may bring

I have no issue with dandelions but have yet to try its wine. Foxtails, well I have issues and the vet has a new jet ski. Patrick

A wonderful poem with a great message. Organic foods taste also taste so much better than chemically sprayed fruits and veggies. Dandelions are neat wildflowers, they also make great wine. Yes back during the great depression Dandelion wine was one of the best. You can still buy some on-line. Food for thought..

I'm with you. They just cut my wildflowers. Damn! Built a home on a wooded acre and a half in 1980. My father viewed what I had done, and said, “Where's the lawn?” Once or twice a year, I used my lawnmower to blow pine needles off the parklike drive.

Here's to a chemical free environment! To my mind dandelions may be a pest to some but you cannot beat that amazing rich golden carpet. So much more beautiful than 'brittle brown'.
