“Does Anybody Know What Time It Is?

Does Anyone Really Care?”

The Band Chicago

As I was rushing down an alley yesterday

Chasing another starving, abandoned canine

The horrid sights I saw, and the news I heard

Soon made me ponder our abysmal modern times

I realized another homeless vet, had died right here

His application for veteran benefits, had been denied

More and more of our veterans can’t get any assistance

And, less and less people today, even care to ask why

As I headed down the street, I saw the gas station sign

They’re now predicting gas will be $5, by Memorial Day

Yet, Congress just approved another Billion Dollar Subsidy

While the oil companies profits were their biggest yet, today

I soon passed an unemployment office and a dingy soup kitchen

The lines at both were enormous; people were in a terrible mood

One of the many millionaires, who want to be our next President

Just said not to worry, he’ll relate to ‘the working class’ real good

I finally spotted the homeless dog that I had been chasing

Several bored teenagers were tormenting him in a city park

They thought his forlorn, emaciated demeanor, was hilarious

I lost track of this outcast, as he now scurried off in the dark

I also now realized that while I was chasing this one left behind

Over 5,000 of his brethren, were euthanized in our shelters today

Yet, 10 more abysmal Puppy Mills were started in the last 24 hours

For ‘pure bred’ dogs, so many in our nation are still very eager to pay

As I headed home now, thinking about the plight of this starving canine

I checked the barbaric Pest Control traps at a nearby big city high school

I managed to free a squirrel, an opossum, and an extremely terrified old cat

Still pondering all I had seen and heard this day, all much too sad and cruel

Does Anybody Know What Time It Is?

Does Anyone Even Care?

If you have seen the movie "The Road," you will know this question: "Do you carry the fire?" Well, as hopeless as the addressing of the 'need' seems to be now, the 'caring' outnumber the 'uncaring,' and even though this is so sad a story you tell....there are many people working in the shadows of 'care.' Today, I gave a $20 tip to a military 'bagger' at the commissary. She started to go away with the empty carts after loading our car with the grocery bags, but she came back to 'hug' me and said: "Thank you so much. No one has ever given me this much." Each and every person who adopts a stray....or helps a human laborer or anything at all that shows 'caring,' it is turning the boat around. Helping to turn the boat around. If we are to be able to sleep at night, we must believe that the 'caring' will prevail.....eventually. Let's never give up -- Diana

Bro Ed,my tears have given way to anger,and I fear that it is happening with many who can barely take the way our society has become so self-centered and uncaring,that's when people turn into violent mobs! I pray this doesn't happen,but it just gets worse every day.We all need to pray about this!

I can scarcely believe what's happening before my very eyes even in this country - even the little I see of it! And, yes, it's set to get worse as more and more of the nation's wealth is syphoned off by those who give less and less. The monetary food-chain is relentless and those at the bottom of it - the voiceless and seemingly invisible - are becoming very high profile. Heartbreaking, but to save even one, each one of us, is worth it and what we must continue to do. We must never become immune, never lose compassion - although even common sense seems lost! xx

At least one was adopted today. You may have seen the news story from La Puente on Saturday about the loyal Black Lab standing by his deceased mate that had been hit by a car on a local street there. I tried to adopt it but about 100 others were ahead of me. I know that there are many, many others though that didn't get the press coverage. Good thing we have you. Patrick
