Our efforts to rescue Shadow continue
And today, it is a tragic race against time
We now have an ‘Epidemic of Feral Canines’
Yet another of our abysmal modern day crimes
I first came across these feral packs of dogs
After Hurricane Katrina, down in New Orleans
The dogs we sadly did not rescue after the storm
Eventually became feral, on those streets so mean
Ninety percent of those ‘left behinds’ were not spayed or neutered
To survive, they formed packs and they invaded abandoned homes
They started families, and they no longer trusted we human beings
Today, so very sadly, they and their numerous offspring, still roam
It is estimated that a million dogs are now being dumped every year
All across this callous nation of ours, in rural areas, cities, and towns
And, they and their offspring, are now treated like their wild brethren
Like the wolves today, they are rounded up, poisoned, and shot down
It is estimated that 50,000 abandoned dogs now roam the streets of Detroit
Down in Houston, people cruelly dump their dogs in ‘The Corridor of Death’
These starving dogs now roam the streets of L.A., Pittsburgh, and Cleveland
And in Chicago, I sadly know we haven’t seen the worst of abandonment yet
The longer an abandoned dog like Shadow remains out on the street
The greater chance he will join a feral pack, and become 'unadoptable'
Yet another horrific tragedy, caused by our growing cruelty and callousness
My sadness increases daily, seeing what we do to our pets and wild animals
Nearly all the street animals we rescue today are not spayed or neutered
So called ‘animal lovers’ don’t get it, or they very callously just don’t care
And so many ignorant people, are still buying their dogs from Puppy Mills
While thousands of starving, unwanted, puppies, are being born out there
