As I wander this sad old world
I ponder the meaning of ‘Home’
While I follow after homeless pets
That mankind is now forcing to roam
And more and more, I am finding
Many with so little, keep their pets
While others, with far more means
Find new ways, to dump them yet
I pass the woman, living in her car
Her two cats, asleep on the back seat
I pass the man and his dog, on the bench
The pledge he made to him, this man keeps
Yet, when I visit our overflowing animal shelters
I far too often see a much different side of humanity
“What a huge mistake we made, getting our son this dog;
We just don’t have time for him, so here he’ll have to stay.”
Even worse, are the many phone calls that I’ll now often receive
About yet another pet, someone tossed out a vehicle on a highway
Or a pet someone left in a park, that is now so forlorn and frightened
Or a pet that someone left in their vacated home, as they drove away
The two cats in the car and the dog on the bench are not ‘homeless’ at all
They are extremely happy and content, to be by the side of ‘their humans’
And their humans, who have so little themselves, haven’t left them behind
If only the rest of humanity, could be like these people, my job would end
I also met a most compassionate and understanding fire fighter
Who now allows a homeless man’s dog to stay at his fire station
When the man now showers, eats, or sleeps, at a homeless shelter
Sadly, most homeless shelters today do not allow pets in our nation

A New York woman is starting a pet food pantry to help people who may be forced to give up their animals because they can no longer afford to feed them.
Susan Katz plans to open Hudson Valley Food Pantry in April in Valhalla, in a space donated by American Legion Post 1038. The pet food would be free to anyone who could demonstrate a need.
It would be open to residents of Westchester, Rockland, Putnam and Dutchess counties. Eventually, Katz would like to open a separate pantry for each county.

I predict that there will come a time, when, like when the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was formed over horses being beaten, that animals will have as much protection as children from the abuses of loving neglect and poor judgment. The big brother of camera with sound is beginning to root out the abusers, one at a time.
Eventually, there will be none left because there'll be no place where they can hide their abuse in the dark.

They let us stay there.
They need their space to roam.
We try not to get in their way here.
They allow us to give them treats.
So we can see their reaction.
Sometimes they do the funniest things.
They make our day; they are the main attraction.
How can people throw their pets away.
They just don't get it; it's insane!
They will have to explain that to their Maker someday!
