“I often think that the night is more alive

And more richly colored than the day.”

Vincent Van Gogh

Music: Moonlight Sonata,

Ludwig Van Beethoven

I have now become a night creature

In my efforts to help abandoned dogs

I am also a fan of other night creatures

Our world after dark now fills me with awe

As I set and bait a dog trap in the dark

A wise old owl alights on a nearby tree

He whispers “Who?” and I reply “Dog”

And now, this old owl keeps vigil with me

Eventually, two feral felines come wandering by

Their immense hunger has drawn them here

I move away from my trap, and I feed them

They dine and leave, and I soon spot a deer

The deer doesn’t linger here very long

Since two coyotes are out on the prowl

Four tiny field mice rush under a bush

They are definitely leery of the old owl

Eventually, I spot a rather large opossum

And a female skunk, with her two newborns

Very sadly, the starving dog never wanders by

And very soon will begin, yet another new morn

Far too many abandoned dogs, are now night creatures

Like their ancestor, the wolf, they are afraid of humanity

I pack up my trap and thank the owl for his fine company

Hoping that perhaps tomorrow night, the dog will find me

In order to tame a creature who is wild or has become wild the story of the Little Prince is very wise.

"You must be very patient," replied the fox.

First you will sit down at a little distance from me -like that - in the grass. I shall look at you out of the corner of my eye, and you will say nothing.

Words are the source of misunderstandings.

But you will sit a little closer to me, every day..."
The next day the Little Prince came back.

"It would have been better to come back at the same hour," said the fox.

"If for example, you came at four o'clock in the afternoon, then at three o'clock I shall begin to be happy. I shall feel happier and happier as the hour advances. At four o'clock, I shall be worrying and jumping about. I shall show you how happy I am!

But if you come at just any time, I shall never know at what hour my heart is ready to greet you..

So the Little Prince tamed the fox.

Despite the sad reason for your vigil, your night-shift duties have a certain magic about them that so many people never get to see.

You had a lot of company on your dog vigil. It so reminds me of my time spent at a nearby state park. I would leave at dusk just when the creatures were coming out. Most of all, I remember an armadillo that would be searching for food under the light at the entrance to the park almost every time I left. Around here, it's much better to sleep during the heat of the day and hunt at night.

By the way, my little backyard drama got more exciting two days ago, when I looked up and saw two black bottomed whistling ducks and their six little ducklings cruising my backyard on their way out of the hole in the cedar fence. I couldn't believe it!

Working the night shift for any length of time is probably detrimental to your health, and certainly your safety.Maybe you should set a trail of milkbones to your doorstep, ala hansel and gretel. You could be the good witch and the dogs wouldn't need the trail to find their way back. They'd be home. cuz p

that quote from Van Gogh
is one of my all-time favourites
because it resonates with me
(even if nowadays my night vision is shot)
but all of that is small and selfish compared
to what the bigger picture in your caring world, Ed, is;
with Jasmin i say your heart is one of the brightest
i've ever come across

Great poem with a timely message. Lately I been taking walks and riding my bike at night. I marvel at the night light from the moon and the unusual creatures rustling about the evening sky. God made it all and it's for all to enjoy, marvel and wonder why? Why does man kill what he does not need to eat. Is this really a sport? Perhaps it's revenge of the devil himself because in the end he knows he will be beat. Amen
