I have rescued canines from numerous hells
Some of them were left behind in a hurricane
Some dumped in the woods, or on the streets
And yesterday, I rescued one tethered to a chain
I had received a call from another stranger
She could no longer stand to watch his pain
“They don’t pay any attention to this poor dog,
He is living a life of misery, tethered to a chain.”
So I soon traveled to the address she had given me
And I spotted him peeking out from his hiding place
He was dirty, hungry, thirsty, and looked so pathetic
Immense loneliness and misery were evident on his face
I rang the doorbell, and an elderly woman eventually appeared
She told me she hadn’t had the time to take Roscoe to the pound
This dog had belonged to her grandson, who no longer lived there
He had moved away last year, since he found a job in another town
“And old Roscoe doesn’t like me very much, he always growls at me;
And on my fixed income, I can’t feed him much, or take him to the vet.”
So I quickly offered to take old Roscoe away, and to find him another home
“He’ll have a chance at a better life,” so the elderly woman at the door said “yes”
It took me awhile to convince Roscoe to come out from his dark, dirty, hiding place
But once he did, he rejoiced in the sunlight, and eventually, in the back seat of my truck
Roscoe is now being treated for severe malnourishment and parasites at an animal hospital
A telephone call from one of his very compassionate neighbors, changed his life and his luck
