“Should you ask me whence these stories,

Whence these legends and traditions,

With the odors of the forest,

With the dew and damp of meadows,

With the curling smoke of wigwams,

With the rushing of great rivers,

With their frequent repetitions,

And their wild reverberations,

As of thunder in the mountains?

“I should answer, I should tell you,

From the forests and the prairies,

From the great lakes of the Northland,

From the land of the Ojibways,

From the land of the Dacotahs,

From the mountains, moors, and fen-lands

Where the heron, the Shuh-shuh-gah,

Feeds among the reeds and rushes.

“I repeat them as I heard them,

From the lips of Nawadaha,

The musician, the sweet singer.”

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow,

From The Song of Hiawatha

Each and every Autumn

The Northwood calls to me

And, each and every Autumn

It is the place, where I long to be

It is here, I love to wander and to camp, with my canines

Taking in all the glorious sights, and marveling at the trees

And here, I always bring along Longfellow’s epic old poem

After all these many years, his words above, still captivate me

There are many captivating Native American legends and stories

Concerning these glorious woods, its lakes, and the wildlife here

From the melodious forest songbirds, and the mesmerizing loons

To the majestic timber wolves, blue herons, and white-tailed deer

I could happily spend the rest of my remaining time, on this planet of ours

Wandering these woods and these lakes, marveling at the wonder, of them all

And since I can once again hear the enchanting Call of the Northwood right now

I will be wandering here, to once again bask in its truly glorious, Spectacle of Fall

Each and every Autumn,

The Northwood calls to me;

And, each and every Autumn,

It is the place, where I long to be.

There is nothing more beautiful than
nature, it is an offering to us that
is priceless and so fulfilling...
It is where we innately belong...
thank you for the beautiful picture
you have painted for us to journey
along with you... sigh...

A heartfelt treatise of the power of Nature, rendered all the more poignant knowing the writer's quest for such rewards is innate and communal with his canines. Beautiful thoughts to carry us city-folk a bit more relaxed through the day. Thank you.

Mr. Ed ~
Beauty of the northwood in fall splendor. Longfellow's poetry
is nature and Native American Indians as to one spirit.

Your spirit is kindred to his.

The call of Longfellow beckons me too. Being stuck here in the lackluster fall of the city of Houston I recall those glorious days when I would walk through the smell of decaying leaves with the warm sun and a chill in the air marveling at the light is reflected off the magical colors all around that took your breath away when you thought about their beauty. Makes me want to write a poem.
