A photo op (photo opportunity), is an opportunity
To take a memorable and effective photograph
Of a politician, a celebrity, or anyone else seeking notoriety.
And this term has now acquired an extremely negative connotation,
Referring to carefully planned pseudo-events, often masqueraded as news.
Today, it is most often associated with politicians who perform tasks
Such as planting trees, picking up litter, and visiting senior citizens,
Most often during election cycles, with the intent of photographers
Catching these events on film, to generate some positive publicity.
We very sadly live in a Photo Op Era
Everyone wants their own, Photo Ops
And I for one, am awfully sick of them
In this election year, they are Non-Stop
The staged scene above shows a politician
Pretending to wash pans, at a soup kitchen
He and his entourage recently swooped in
They even brought their own clean aprons
This politician was there for a total of fifteen minutes
By the time he arrived, all the work had been finished
This soup kitchen’s needy clientele, was already gone
What lesson does this teach us, and what will we learn?
I have sadly learned that I could never trust any politician such as this
I already know that the real work in this soup kitchen is done everyday
By very compassionate volunteers, who actually care about its clientele
And I wish all of these photo opportunists would just get out of the way
Another politician recently swooped into an overflowing animal shelter
Pretending to actually care about all of the abandoned pets dumped there
He grimaced and he groaned, having to actually touch some of the animals
And I thought he was going to die, when on his suit he found some cat hair
Believe It or Not,
There is Actual Work Being Done,
In Our Now Immensely Suffering Nation;
But We Need A Lot More Real Volunteers,
Not More and More Fake Photo Opportunists.
