“The life of Afghan dogs is not one of comfort at the best of times;

Most of their day is spent hunting for scraps of food,

Or hiding from the hot desert sun during the summer,

Or the freezing cold of a desert winter night.

There is no pampered pet status in Afghanistan.”

Pen Farthing

As a pet rescuer, some stories really get to me

Especially the stories, involving our valiant troops

So many of them have befriended dogs in war zones

Our soldiers all know, when a furry friend, is true blue

This is the story of a valiant Marine in war-torn Afghanistan

Who had an extremely loyal canine friend there, named ‘Bolt’

He and this starving homeless dog eventually became inseparable

Until the base commander decided that all the stray dogs had to go

Bolt and several other canines were driven twelve miles to a village

But this Marine’s furry friend soon began following them back to base

The Marines in the convoy took pity on Bolt, and transported him back

And now, the base commander decided that this loyal canine, could stay

This Marine and his best friend, had to once again say good-bye, when he left

But once back home, this soldier knew that he could not leave his friend behind

A pet rescue group named ‘Nowzad’ helped him raise funds, to bring Bolt home

And thankfully, enough money was donated by people, still compassionate and kind

Their glorious day of reunion will occur soon, after Bolt clears U.S. quarantine,

I, for one, rejoice, that this bond remains, between a loyal dog and a U.S. Marine

And I’ve provided the link below to the ‘Nowzad’ Afghanistan Pet Rescue Website,

If you would like to make a donation, to help two more dedicated friends, to reunite

A truly wonderful story - Bolt is blessed indeed!
So sad for those left behind. What is the matter with this world? - So many extremes.

A high school friend of mine just wrote in his memoir about taking in stray cats when he was stationed in Turkey. I think troops have always found animals for companionship in far-off places without any loved ones around. It is sad to think that we will spend thousands of dollars to bring a dog back from Afghanistan and not take care of a dog in need in our neighborhood. Just goes to show us that we are rich in expensive weird activity but poor in good sense.

To leave a pet behind is like leaving a part of your heart behind. A lovely and victorious writing that brought tears to my eyes.

It so often takes an animal story of loyalty and love to wake the sleeping "rock" so many people have become. Hopefully this will break a number out of their slumber. Thank you again for another warm and poignant story.
