“If there are no dogs in Heaven,

Then when I die,

I want to go where they went.”

Will Rogers

A cold and rainy autumn night

She forlornly paces a parking lot

Most people do not even notice her

About today’s lost souls, they care not

I pick her up and place her in my truck

She crawls onto my lap, seeking refuge

She is cold, hungry, and very frightened

But at least now, her nightmare is through

She has no collar or tags, and no microchip

The vet believes she is about four years old

She is dehydrated, and has two injured paws

I wish she could speak, her story should be told

I now wonder if she had been dumped in this parking lot

I also wonder if she could be a backyard breeder’s escapee

I have checked all of the Lost Pet bulletin boards and websites

It seems no one is missing her, which brings great sadness to me

The vet soon asks me what I will do with this tiny, forlorn, lost soul

I ask him to care for her for a few days and then, to have her spayed

I name her ‘Sweetie,’ and I sadly drive off into the cold autumn night

Wondering how so many, care so very little, for all the lost souls, today

You do God's work. I'd like to think that she is missed and that her people were just too stupid to have her chipped and tagged. Wishful thinking I know. Patrick

The human race is full of lost souls also and some of them are the ones who cannot take care of animals...Thank you again, Ed.

You are truly, “the rescuer of lost souls.” But, of the 10,000 pets let go every day, you are only able to rescue a very few. I wonder what it will take to change the mindset of people who use pets says throwaway commodities rather than living breathing creatures of our own lineage. All we can do is try to educate.

I never cease to be moved by not only the stories you share, but the tenacity and capacity you exercise in caring for such innocent creatures. Thank you.

Brother Ed. I´m not sure if there are dogs in heaven but one thing I am sure of is that those who are cruel to nature particulary dogs shall not go to heaven.

You made me cry again - in pity for the lost ones, but in awe of the love you bestow on the world.
