A Hurricane Sandy Victim
We animal advocates were all hoping
That America had learned from Katrina
That peoples’ pets are a part of their family
But sadly for many, our nation has learned not
Many shelters which were set up for Hurricane Sandy
Were still refusing to accept the pets of displaced families
It’s been estimated that 30 million pets were in Sandy’s path
Hundreds of thousands of them were left behind again in Sandy
Numerous pet rescue organizations have once again been mobilized
As they had, when Hurricane Katrina had devastated our Gulf Coast
ASPCA, and many other groups, have once again sent rescue squads
And volunteers have sprung into action – folks who love animals the most
If you live in the eastern part of the United States, and want to volunteer
Please contact one of the national animal advocate groups, or a local rescue
In addition, yet once again, donated supplies, money, and many foster homes
Are going to be needed, before the hell these left behinds are enduring is through
As someone who helped rescue left behind pets in the aftermath of Katrina’s wrath
I sadly know that the hearts of many pet owners and the hearts of far too many pets
Are now broken, as these furry family members desperately wait for someone to come
To rescue them, and to reunite them with their families – these victims we must not forget
Please have your own beloved family member pets micro-chipped,
These chips are life-savers when attempting to reunite family pets;
And, please prepare a Disaster Plan, which includes your animals,
I sadly believe that many more devastating disasters will occur yet.
