“We think sometimes that poverty
Is only being hungry and homeless.
The poverty of being unwanted, unloved,
And uncared for, is the greatest poverty of all.”
Mother Theresa
Another extremely sad phone call
Yesterday morning, Veterans Day
From a kind hearted old woman
And, this is what she had to say
“I have been feeding two street orphans,
Best friends, they were always side by side;
One of them was very recently killed by a car,
The remaining one is injured, both made me cry.
“I’ve managed to lure the remaining dog into my garage,
He is very sad now, and very skittish, and needs a friend;
If you can come to get him, I can give you $20 for his care,
He is too big for me to handle, but I want his suffering to end.”
I soon found myself parked behind this kind hearted woman’s garage
And soon, I encountered a sad, traumatized orphan, with a broken leg
So I picked him up and I placed him into the back seat of my old truck
Yet another of our nation’s many discarded ones, on this Veterans Day
On the way to the animal hospital, he managed to squirm up into the front seat
Where he now smothered me with kiss after kiss of gratitude for saving his life
I soon decided to name him ‘Vet’ because he is battle-scarred, like our veterans
He also lost his best friend, he is homeless, and he deserves to live, without strife
“We think sometimes that poverty
Is only being hungry and homeless.
The poverty of being unwanted, unloved,
And uncared for, is the greatest poverty of all.”
