-Inspired By Ron Hull’s ‘Dare’ Poem-

“Life consists with wildness.

The most alive, is the wildest;

Not yet subdued by man,

Its presence refreshes him.”

Henry David Thoreau

I’ve encountered quite a few bears

On my numerous treks into the wild

But this particularly happy wild bunch

Made me as merry as a very young child

We were again in the wilds of Canada

In a very lovely, and a very remote place

A realm, that still actually belonged to them

We humans, were the intruders, in their space

As the two of us were traipsing along through the dense green forest

We spotted this wild bunch, and my fishing partner began to frown

Of course, he immediately very quickly headed off down the trail

And now, I was staring at them - mother and her two baby clowns

They began following me, and I didn’t want to lead them to camp

So I decided to toss them some fish out of my huge fish-filled net

By the time that I got back to our camp, on the other lakeshore

My heavy parcel of fish was quite light, there was nary one fish left

As my fishing partner and I soon sat down to dinner

Eating our now lavish meal of a can of baked beans

I soon began laughing and howling my fool head off

But my fishing buddy had no sense of humor it seems

He and I were leaving the next morning anyway

And the two of us had certainly had our share of fish

Now I always laugh when I think of this little wild bunch

They had a most tasty free meal, which was certainly delish

But it is prudent to ‘bear proof’ one’s camp in bear country

A mother bear guarding her children, can turn diligently mean

So my fishing partner should have been extremely delighted too

It was unlikely this wild bunch would now crave our can of beans

That’s when I started fishing with dogs

Like me, they really know how to howl

And their willingness to share the wilderness

With its very ancient and truly rightful owners

They always instinctively comprehend somehow

More insight into the oft avoided relationship man should nurture with our animal friends. Loved this one. Have had similar experiences only while climbing in the Cascades.

I concur, Ron's poem is inspiring.
One feels this poem in an ineffable way. You are natures boy, always at one with nature as you crusade to protect all that we have to hold dear. Once it's gone, the bears will even try the beans. :)

Until I watched a film called US Marshall, it hadn't occurred to me, how much of America is swampland, huge forests, and so vast in wilderness. On my last visit I heard about snapping turtles close by, but I thought it was made up. Gosh, do Americans realise what - natural ancient treasures - they have and are obliged to protect! The only wilderness we have, is my bank account.

Dogs are a better choice when you are in the wilderness. They are loyal and you never get tired of their company. They don't complain and they are excited to awaken each day and share a warm fire with you at night, never interrupting the peace that is cast by the stars and the moon. I loved this story, Ed. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
Take care,
Sherry

What a wonderful story. It seems to me that you “bribed” the wild bunch to keep them at bay. You are right. To stare down and intimidate a mother with cubs is probably not a wise thing to do. Still, carrying a basket of fish makes you a candy store that she can smell a mile away. They're proofing is hard to do but necessary. My younger brothers once hung our food pack about 6 feet off the ground, thinking that it was safe.

Did know that my little poem would be so inspiring…
