-An Extremely Sad Follow-up To My Poem ‘The Wild Bunch’-

“Wilderness, in contrast with those areas where man and his works

Dominate the landscape, is hereby recognized, as ‘a protected area,’

Where the earth and its community of life are untrammeled by man;

And where man himself is just a visitor, who does not disturb.”

The Federal Wilderness Protection Act of 1964

Music: Nature’s Lament

Many still claim that we are not killing our planet

Many still claim that ‘Nature’ will always be here

But 2012 marks a tragic departure from our past

A departure, which should bring all of us, to tears

Not even one wilderness acre was set aside as ‘protected area’

Not even one natural landmark, was designated as ‘historical’

Not even one animal species, was designated as ‘endangered’

Today’s so called ‘leaders’ have never been this callous before

This is the very first year, in nearly the last fifty years

That not one law has been passed, to protect something

Our elected officials, no longer want to protect, anything

And this is sadly evident, by the decimation they now bring

More and more devastating drilling, by foreign-owned oil companies

More and more mountaintop mining, destroying our own mountains

More and more wildlife, being stripped of protection, and shot down

Our ‘leaders’ are now on a Path of Destruction, that now, will never end

More and more of our once glorious national forests, now being, bull-dozed down

More and more of our once wondrous national parks, now being destroyed, for profit

More and more of our national treasures like mustangs, bison, and wolves being killed

And, less and less, of what once we and our leaders had all once cherished, will be left

Many still claim that we are not killing our planet,

Many still claim that ‘Nature’ will always be here;

But 2012 marks a tragic departure from our past,

A departure, which should bring all of us, to tears.

“In the wildness,

Is the preservation,

Of the entire world.”

Henry David Thoreau

It is a sad commentary on the direction our government is taking. Dependence on foreign energy and jobs are taking the forefront over long-term needs. It is our own fault for not demanding better. On the positive side, I have seen some people change their views recently based on facts rather than belief, like the one that says that resources are unlimited when we are decimating our wild places and wildlife at a record rate.

Yes, yes, yes. And, what I held as true and dangerous 50 years ago remains the MOST endangered element on the planet: common sense. Yet, as long as population and education remains the forgotten priority, we will continue to proliferate more and more uneducated, "babies gone wild" satisfactions for unconscious grown up children still unable to be adults. It is sad. Indeed a crisis or moral bankruptcy that has little to do with the supernatural, but everything to do with rational behavior. Thanks for the information and poetic structure of your thoughts.

Nature will only be here when we protect her...
A very sad day and I do my part in caring for all
the creatures that come to my yard to feast... but
we must all do our part and an outcry must be heard...
I put no pesticides on my lawn, I do nothing to harm nature...

Wonderful Mr. Ed, let it be known and hopefully there is
enough outcry to do something about it...

No wonder we're so isolated - 4.2 light years to the nearest star in a galaxy 150,000 light years across within a universe 15 billion light years across - and no possibility of us ever getting anywhere near the stars - we seem to be in quarantine, a diseased and destructive species that must be isolated from everything everywhere. This world is indeed a lifeboat and once it's destroyed, we too will die - as we deserve. Little wonder that even God seems indifferent to our fate.

I see a parallel with the Nazis here, we were asked at the time, why did you not get off your duff and do something about it, hm, how many do, can you count them, if you can, there are not enough, when I go out protesting, just last week, for the brutal trapping of little coyotes, we had five to help, in a city of a million, what does that tell you, causing grief to millions of poor innocent creatures is no different than what the Nazis did onto humans, are we specist I wonder. Wild horses, wolves, and other critters, we now called pests, here the park authorities, regularly kill little groundhogs and their babies with gas, because some asshole not paying attention walking might stumple, everything it seems if given the convienience factor can become a pest, how about designating those that wreck havock on our wildlife a pest, it might help. Read if you want Regies article this week it will bring home the realities that might become our Planet. Bless ya Ed.

Mother Earth is crying out and most pay no attention to her desperate plea! Noting seems to be sacred anymore....and that's devastating for the generations to come...Thanks for sharing Ed!
