Another sad year for pets had now begun
And soon, another sad call on the telephone
“There is a dog living along the railroad tracks,
He’s been there for a long time, so sadly all alone.”
And soon, I am at the new location provided me
And so sadly, I see yet one more abandoned canine
And now, my heart is breaking for yet another outcast
Pet Abandonment is on the rise, a hideous human crime
This abandoned canine already wants no part of humanity
He has already lost his former willingness to love and trust
He keeps his distance from me, and watches me very warily
This will be yet another difficult task, but I vow not to give up
I begin by placing delectable food offerings where he can see them
He is starving now, and his sense of smell, is awakened immediately
I back away from the offered food, and retreat to the inside of my truck
He very gratefully devours the food, stares at me awhile, and then, he flees
And now begins the increasingly difficult task of gaining another outcast’s trust
I have sadly discovered that it now takes far longer to do so than it formerly had
Many of the abandoned pets in our nation today, have also been hideously abused
As I now watch this one vanish back into the woods, both my heart and soul are sad

A great write about the abuse. We have two cats from a shelter. One was abused. It's been almost seven years since we go them. One meet me at the door and commands my time as soon as I come home. The other one still hides. Once a pet is abused it may take a lifetime before their feelings from abuse subside.
