“When I look at ugliness, I see beauty.

When I am far from home, I see old friends.

When there is noise, I hear a robin's song instead.

When I am in a crowd, it is the mountain's peace I feel.

In the winter of my sorrow, I remember the summer of my joy.

In the nighttime of my loneliness, I breathe the day of my thanksgiving.

But when sadness spreads its ever thickening blanket, and that is what I see,

I look to a high place, until I find a reflection, of what lies deep inside of me.”

An Old Navajo Indian Saying

I first read this old Native American saying

On a trip to the southwest, many years ago

And, it has stayed with me, all of this time

Now it travels with me, wherever I might go

For some reason, I thought of it early this morning

As I got dressed, and I trekked off into the wood

Such ugly things are happening in the world today

And it’s now getting harder and harder, to feel good

We are seeing far too much sadness and misery now

This new year, far too many souls, are singing the blues

But as I stood here alone, in the silence of the early morn

I suddenly heard the voice of a little bird, breaking through

The forest all around me was awakening to a brand new day

This bird seemed so grateful, just to experience another dawn

And now, it was as if this one tiny creature had inspired many

Suddenly, it seemed as if the entire forest, had burst into song

Perhaps this joyous little bird, and that extremely sage Native American

Were both much wiser than I, in finding the high places they wanted to be

Suddenly, both this old saying and this new song, rang out through the air

And now I realized I was in my own high place, right here, in these pine trees

Stunning, the last stanza brings it all together with a startle at its sagacity.

Ed,
I felt the same way this morning also.
I can relate to the Native American part of your poem as well. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder...Seek it and you shall find it.
Good one Ed!

Peace, love and light,
Amber

Pine trees are great to hide in, and they smell great too so when you don't take that bath in the morning you will smell of pine when you get home...that will make your wife alot happier...e

My best place to connect spiritually with the universe...is in the forest...beside a lake...or by the ocean...anywhere that the music is birdsong and the breeze whispers to me...

And too, dear Ed, I see you, and all the little creatures along with you, and all those you saved, and I am thankful there is such a being, you see, and hear well, dear friend.

While reading your poem I was listening to Van Morrison's "Beside You" and many of the lyrics repeated over and over were that simple phrase 'breathe in breathe out' which is a reflection of your experience 'on a cold winter morn' which was quite refreshing. Nicely done.
Cheers,
Dan

We mustn't live in the world unless we wish
to be part of the world...
Amongst the world as it is, I find beauty
every morning... Of course you know I am
a spiritualist and nature is my home...
Yesterday I saw the most beautiful Pileated Woodpecker
they are rare and he was glorious sitting pecking at
the suet I put out for all the birds, his woodpecker is
the largest of their species. I felt blessed to see him...

See the wisdom, and see it in nature... wonderful write
Mr. Ed...
