A Follow-On To My Poem ‘Night Call’
About another of my recurring dreams;
My wife’s heritage is Mescalero Apache,
And she hails from down New Mexico Way;
She has some very intriguing dreams as well,
Perhaps we both lived another life, another day.
I think that I might have been an old lawman
I’m pretty certain that I can still shoot and ride
I remember wearin a tin badge & a Colt revolver
Ridin my trusty old pony with an old lawman’s pride
I think that I might have had at least two or three
Real hairy lookin sidekicks - I think I really did
And I think we were ridin through those canyons
Chasin old Black Jack Ketchum or Billie the Kid
Go West, Old Man, keeps echoing through time
And in this very familiar recurring dream of mine
I’m back down in New Mexico, in the mid 1800s
Surrounded by old silver mines, cattle, and swine
Sleepin out in the desert every night
Beneath those bright, wide open, skies
With an old lawman’s prayer in my heart
And a stubborn dream of justice in my eyes
I think that we may have settled down in old Silver City
Or we might have headed up around rustic old Santa Fe
I think we might have tracked down some thievin outlaws
And I’m pretty darn certain that law and order won the day
These many recurring dreams of mine all seem so realistic
Tonight, I hope to be dreamin this old lawman’s dream
I can already picture those deep, dark, desert arroyos
Those stars, and that very familiar, New Mexico scene
I know I could’ve been a lawman,
Down New Mexico Way,
I Just Know It…
Or perhaps, me and the critters,
Just watch too many old Westerns.

Great poem Mr. Ed, and please know we have all been
here before, not once but many times! We keep a little
of our memories each time as a preview to what once was...
Awesome!
