Very sadly, these horrendous days
Most acts of compassion, are a crime
When I was a child, they were applauded
We very sadly live in a cruel and callous time
A tiny injured fawn, lying on their neighbor’s lawn
Most people today would ignore it, and go their way
One couple took pity on it, and nursed it back to health
For their compassionate act, they are facing jail time today
“You Broke The Law! You Harbored A Dangerous Animal!”
“This Deer Could Be Very Dangerous and A Threat To Society!”
“Ordinary Citizens Have No Right To Help An Injured Animal!”
Says The Department of Natural Resources, So Very Pompously
I can sadly relate to this couple’s plight, for their act of compassion
I am often chastised and ridiculed for helping both dogs and wildlife
They always tell me that I should leave animal rescue to ‘professionals’
Even when I find a dying dog struck by a car, in the middle of the night
Some of us simply act instinctively, when we encounter any injured being
Whether it be a human being, a bird, a raccoon, a canine, a feline, or a deer
And although many of us will continue to help any of our neighbors in need
Anyone contemplating a Crime of Compassion should not have to live in fear
This now healthy and happy ‘dangerous deer’ has suddenly miraculously vanished
She must have known ‘professionals’ were on the way, to euthanize her, as ‘a threat’
And in my own area, a ‘menacing,’ ‘marauding,’ ‘threat to society’ homeless canine
Has somehow escaped from my garage, and ‘the professionals’ have not found her yet
And if you are now wondering
How a tiny newborn deer
Or a starving stray dog
Are now labeled as a:
'Threat To Society'
'Menacing' and 'Marauding'
They simply have the audacity
To collapse on someone's lawn,
Or wander into a store seeking warmth,
Or God Forbid, knock over a garbage can,
In their desperate life or death search for food.
Very sadly, these horrendous days,
Most acts of compassion, are a crime;
When I was a child, they were applauded,
We very sadly live, in a cruel and callous time.

acronym DNR is Does Nothing Right... they are all arses and
I have absolutely no use for them a tal! In fact I defy them
daily and my neighbors know they best not turn me in for feeding
the wildlife, small town here and I would find out... my reaction
would not be pretty..
