One Thousand Wolves

“From beasts we scorn as soulless,

In forest, field, and den;

The cry goes up to witness,

The soullessness of men.”

William Inge

Music: All Is Gone

Our greedy ‘leaders’ took away their federal protection

Two years ago now, paid off by special interest groups

Since then, a thousand wolves have been gunned down

It won’t be long, before their days on earth are through

It won’t be long, before our forests are devoid of them

It won’t be long, before all our mountaintops are barren

It won’t be long, before I’ll never hear their soulful howls

To me, they are The Spirit of Wild, now annihilated by men

And unlike coyotes, mountain lions, bears, and other predators

These timber wolves avoid all contact with us, and never attack

I have seen them wandering, and I have heard their soulful howls

They never be-grudged my presence; I never had to watch my back

As we now also sadly betray Man’s Best Friend, descended from the Wolf

Abandoning him, and abusing him, and killing him, in shelters and pounds

We now put Bounties on Timber Wolves, and we hunt them from airplanes

We mercilessly shoot them down and poison them, wherever they are found

Our greedy ‘leaders’ took away their federal protection,

Two years ago now, paid off by special interest groups;

Since then, a thousand wolves have been gunned down,

It won’t be long, before their days on earth are through.

The very last Jaguar in America was killed two years ago,

Less than a hundred Mexican Lobos remain in the Southwest;

The Florida Panther will soon be gone, like the Passenger Pigeon,

Wild Horses being slaughtered; to annihilate All Wild, now our quest.

Where might be a petition to rescind the change in federal protection? Having made three features involving wolves, I can attest to your appraisal of their relationship to humans. Of course, it's not about humans, it's about what HUMANS EAT...BEEF/LAMB. Would that we could arrest the carnivorous weakness of this sentient species and effectively show the choice to become vegetarian/vegan is a small price to pay for preserving the longevity of the wolf as well as other natural predators our planet was born with and should be allowed to continue with their inherent fusion with nature.

A heartless man he who takes the life of a beautiful
"wild" animal.

I have to agree with Annabel. Killing the wild. For what? We are sick. Progression of civilization is a myth and joke. So many are heartless animals themselves. Get them Mr. Ed. Liz

Very well-written, Mr. Ed, and your 'end days are near for wildlife' sad song has been sung by influencial voices (John Denver's Wildlife Concert: song = "You Say That The Battle Is Over") and (Barbara Kingsolver's book: "Prodigal Summer") and countless others, so it proves that your use of the term 'leaders' is very powerful because it yellow highlights the idea that we have the wrong leaders. The more words like yours here that enter the atmosphere is our only measure it seems. Thanks for putting yours out here. ~~ Diana

A sad reminder of the blight humanity is to this beautiful planet!! When will it stop! Life means nothing to far too many of those who could make a difference....

Too ugly for words...
These people should be ashamed - but they won't be
They should be slaughtered themselves - but they won't be
The Human Race has become an UGLY race!

Why? can someone tell me why?
I used to work for the government.
My favorite saying about big government was, "If it makes NO sense at all than your government will do it."
It seems things have NOT changed.

Sadly we are our OWN worst enemies.

God help the soul of the USA.

Man, this really gets me sick!

Humans need extermination instead of all the Natural beings on this planet...I am willing to bet, when hunters tire of killing off the animals, they will then use humans for prey...e

it's all about economic growth… a thin disguise for greed and the relentless growth of the human population constantly trying to “tame nature” and take from it its most valuable commodities as though they would always be there for the taking. Unless we want all of our wildlife in zoos and sanctuaries, we should heed the call of scientific study and lay down our guns in favor of cameras catching trophies on digits rather than strung up at trading posts showing off our manhood for having killed the alpha male and taken pictures on film with rare earth colors of the gruesome scene, our castoffs polluting the landscape and extending the killing to creatures who befall the offal.

This just sickens me...
All those beautiful creatures ripped from their
natural habitat for the joy of men's sport...
There are not enough words in my vocabulary to
express how much this saddens me...
Thank you for the awareness I hope it reaches many
and I hope those who find this sport amusing have
their weapons stuffed where the sun cannot be reached...

Had I a choice to be, a wolf or human don't you see, I'd spurn this species that's my guess, a wolf I'd be, I must confess, and maybe some day soon, a raven, or a loon, and further on the chain, a dogie not too tame, or just a little bumblebee, yeah that's what I would like to be, and if you ask me why, to heaven you must fly, there the answer of my maker, when he asks is there a taker, that does not have the mark of Cain, that holds this species chain. Bless you brother, for sending this, I hope to hear one sermon this Sunday condemming this brutality, just one, for mans creed.
