Our Abysmal Dog Shows

“One day perhaps, we will put an end to the large-scale suffering

Our poor, too-trusting, canine companions have faced on our behalf.

But if that is ever going to happen, this ignorant culture of Purebreds,

Of Elegance, and of Exclusivity, needs to be one of the first things to go.”

Joel Boyce

As one who rescues so many abandoned dogs from the streets

I cannot even watch the dog shows like Westminster anymore

They ignore the plight of millions of unwanted dogs in America

They promote more and more ‘upscale breeding,’ which I deplore

As more and more of America’s canines are now abused, and neglected, and abandoned

More and more people, continue to spend exorbitant amounts, purchasing these ‘purebreds’

And the majority of these people could care less about all of the homeless dogs in their areas

About all of the unwanted, unloved dogs in America’s shelters, that so sadly, will soon be dead

Dog Shows have even dropped Pedigree Dog Food, from their lists of ‘approved sponsors’

Since Pedigree promotes dog adoption, not purchasing a dog from a breeder or a puppy mill

So very sadly today, twenty-five percent of the abandoned dogs that we rescue from the streets

Are these purchased ‘purebreds;’ they too, are being dumped, and in our shelters, now being killed

Interesting how dog purchases and the shows some are groomed for mirror the malady of our own species: trophy partners in marriage and non-marriage relationships. One only has to look into the eyes of a few behind caged doors of a shelter to see beyond the surface and feel that inner honesty of their gaze. No agenda, just BEING the tender loving creatures they are. As to our own species, eyes are either framed in goth, or other heavy makeup to create a dominant look, and/or given false color with contacts that peek through fluttering false eyelashes, et al ad nausea. When are they going to have a "best in show" of rescuers like yourself?????

How sad, for these dog shows could be informing the public of the plight of the dogs on the street.

I hate the idea that they have to put splints in ears and cut off tails to make a breed presentable. The haircuts and grooming are atrocious. My Pomeranian looked great all the time without any grooming. I never had to cut his nails because he ran free in the yard and wore them down naturally. His only treat was a milk bone for his teeth. I fed him Pedigree geriatric food that kept him lean and active with hard, dry poop that I never had to pick up. The more natural we make a dog's life, the better.

It is what it is... and it always will be... that is
the way of the rich and famous and the not so rich and famous...

Never watched those shows, don't care for them for the same reason...

A dog, a status symbol, like a Buggatti, or Benz, showing the owners ego in bright lights, where's the love, when for the same money a few hundred poor little pooches could be rescued; I doubt though that this part of humanity will ever change, the former club of aristocrats behaved the same way toward their fellow human beings, as they do today, why would it be different with an other species.
