“One way to open your eyes,

Is to periodically ask yourself,

What if I had never seen this before?

What if I knew I might never see it again?”

Rachel Carson

Music: Nature’s Lament

I awoke before the daylight

He was calling at the window

A tiny speck of yellow on white

A pre-dawn visitor out in the snow

I rushed out the backdoor to greet him

He was a marvelous Evening Grosbeak

It seemed he had something on his mind

With musical cadence, to me he did speak

He was wondering why my birdfeeder was empty

He wanted to know if I could spare just a few seeds

I told him that I could, and I quickly filled up the feeder

And now he sang a song of thanks, as he hungrily did eat

And soon, as I now watched this tiny yellow traveler dining

My mind wandered back to my childhood so many years ago

Back then, these tiny yellow birds had traveled in large flocks

Back then, I always spotted numerous birds of his kind, on the go

But so very sadly, like so many other types of winged creatures these days

His kind, has drastically declined, in our ever increasing inhospitable world

I sadly know this lonely hungry visitor has lost ninety percent of his brethren

And my heart and soul ache for his kind, as their waning days on earth unfurl

“One way to open your eyes,

Is to periodically ask yourself,

What if I had never seen this before?

What if I knew I might never see it again?”

I didn't know what kind it was, but we had a Tye dyed looking bird here the other day, and boy was he pretty, blues & yellows and reds, almost all the colors of the rainbows, but he looked like a common starling...still he was most pretty...e

However the bird kind are stronger in nature than
our four legged kind... they migrate to hospital parts...

But very sad indeed Mr. Ed

Your poem is a wake up call for life itself! We will drive ourselves into extinction if we keep this up! We are literally killing ourselves in a sense. Many cancers were not so widespread before we used so many chemicals in our foods. In a remote farming town in northern Russia most cancers do not exist and many people live to 100. All foods are naturally grown and farm animals are raised the old fashioned way. So if we want to live a long healthy life we need to do the same. Amen!

Yes, let's hear it for more logging, oil pipelines, fracking, strip mining, more housing development et el. Sadly, it will never stop until we're blessed with an alien invasion that does some ass kicking and hopefully uses the species to clean up the mess...in chains.

Yes, it's so sad to see some of our most beautiful songbirds declining all over North America. On the world scene, it must be much more drastic. The only thing we can do is try to create enough wild environment so that these little creatures can continue like they have for eons without us.

It's a question of value, isn't it, real value has soul, the collective soul of humanity has been relentlesly degraded, by false values, virtual reality , the celluloid strip, the mindsetters and story tellers, they don't tell the beauty of the creators story, but that of darkness and destruction, we have become alien to the real world, no need looking for them from outer space, we are here. Bless ya Ed.

What a delightful picture...you're so blessed to have such beautiful creatures visit you these early days of spring...it's so sad that such beauty is so fleeting these days...children of tomorrow may never know some of these creatures we always took for granted...

Anna
