This is supposed to be ‘National Wildlife Week,’

A Week Set Aside to Honor America’s Wildlife;

Instead, our efforts to annihilate everything Wild,

Are now being carried out relentlessly, both day and night.

More than 1,100 timber wolves have already been massacred,

As a result of massive hunting, trapping, and poisoning in America,

Since Congress stripped them of Endangered Species Protection in 2011.

 “In the wildness,

Is the preservation,

Of the entire world.”

Henry David Thoreau

Music: Nature’s Lament

Many claim that our world is not dying

But I know in my heart and soul it’s true

Every year now, we kill more ‘Wildness’

And every year, more of Nature, is through

There are very few places left, on this entire planet

Which have not been adversely impacted, by our race

We take, and we force out, and we kill off, other species

For ourselves, we begrudge anything ‘wild,’ its own space

North America’s bears have now lost 95 percent of their range

North America’s wolves are now being shot down from the sky

The very last herds of wild horses and wild bison are being killed

And in the name of ‘Progress,’ very few human beings, even ask ‘Why’

We have also sadly already over-harvested most of Earth’s oceans

So we’ve now decided to murder the competing animal ‘fish-eaters’

Every year, we kill off more and more turtles, dolphins, and sea lions

Yet, in our quest to satisfy our own insatiable needs, we have no fears

As our ever-increasing human population and needs continue to grow

There will be less and less room and resources left, for anything ‘wild’

And the world we’ll be leaving to the future generations which follow us

Will be devoid of all ‘wild,’ and will look nothing like mine did as a child

We continue to blow up our mountaintops and pollute our water supplies

We continue to spray toxic poisons on our food crops and on our lawns

As a result, the birds, bees, and butterflies are all now rapidly declining

And one day soon, we will awaken to an eerie, silent, nature dead dawn

So today, I thank God that over the course of my lifetime,

I was able to see so much of His Wondrous Wild Creation;

And I very sadly agree with old Thoreau and so many others,

That without ‘Wild,’ there will be only life-ending devastation.

No! No! No! What have we done? I cannot look at that photo.
Your poem however is right on!

Peace, love and abundant blessings,

Little to add to another of your sincere pleas for sanity other than to suggest that just as we cannot know white in the absence of black, so too we may well be starved of compassion once we remove all that which serves to stir up this innate quality we possess. That would include all things wild including flowers, trees, et al. Thank you for another few moments to reflect on an element of our lives that really matters.

Oh Ed you cut us to the heart. I'm so thankful I have been blessed to live in at a time when "Wild" is not just a memory.

You're absolutely right, all the crap that man does to this world & its residents, but who really needs to see a picture like that one, I mean, who takes that sort of photo and puts it up for all to see...it is not only disgusting what man does to his fellow man, but to the creatures that he is supposed to be taking care of too...I will likely be losing my internet service soon, no money to pay for it, and I am quite frankly happy not to have to see what the media puts up for all to see...e

I fully agree. All poets and lovers of the wild should rise up and write their indignation like you have to make it clear to those who feed the growing human population with their talk of growth and progress that they are wrong when they annihilate the wild has some kind of conquering species not worth all the gold they garner.

I agree with Jasmin, what will be left at the end
without supporters like us to make a stand for them...

What will be left in the end, is the many platidutes of politicians and their supporters, not a bright future indeed.
