“The worst sin toward our fellow creatures is not to hate them,

But to be indifferent to them.”

George Bernard Shaw

Music: All By Myself

I do not understand modern mankind

Our indifference is growing by the day

We ignore the suffering beings around us

Most could care less, and go their merry way

I received a telephone call from a postal worker

Telling me about an old homeless dog on her route

She seemed to be the only one concerned about him

He was completely ignored by human beings all about

When I arrived at the neighborhood where he was living

I very sadly saw him scavenging around in a garbage can

He looked so cold and miserable, and so old and neglected

That I immediately felt a sense of shame for my fellow man

I got out of my truck and I began walking toward this poor soul

He stared back at me, with the saddest pair of eyes I had ever seen

He was used to being ignored, so he ignored me, as I walked up to him

But then he smelled the food offering in my hand, and hobbled up to see

My kindness startled him, and he ate ravenously like he had not done in many days

And then when I opened my truck door, he did not even hesitate, he crawled right in

He soon fell asleep in the back seat of my truck, the first time he felt warmth all winter

As I drove to the animal hospital, I wondered why Indifference was now one of our sins

I’ve named this innocent starving outcast ‘Scruffy’

This invisible homeless dog is about eight years old

His coat is dirty, ragged, and torn, and he is far too thin

But today he’s getting some help, and he’s out of the cold

I do not understand modern mankind,

Our indifference is growing by the day;

We ignore the suffering beings around us,

Most could care less, and go their merry way.

Indifference is indeed one of this century's most apparent maladies needing attention. Your heartfelt story is unfortunately the tip of the proverbial iceberg, for our species' indifference to one another, helped along by a global media's incessant promotion of "fear," makes for a life force that is unconsciously moving toward self annihilation through selfish living. Your stories of canine and feline cruelty is but the foreshadowing of similar pandemics between man and woman, old and young people.

I wish you could get him out to me, him I WOULD take, he is so cute and looks so sad...he may not live in the lap of luxury here with me, but he would be warm & fed, just about where I am too in my life...e

Good descriptive poem Ed,

Today you took me to a place as I walked with you and I felt your joy when you became compassionate when there was no compassion by others. Today I would rather focus on the compassion you gave then to focus the indifference of scores of others. I love to see the joy in others when I give as well. In a mere dog and cat it's always so sincere. But then man gives compassion to another man things are not always so clear. God bless you Ed.

Peace, love and blessings,

John Michael

Good morning Mr. Ed. I just read your poem and you're right: as a society, our insensitivity to pain and suffering grows by the day. But just to throw in a different angle, I'd say that because of it, people like you and some of us and organizations like the A.S.P.C.A have found the way to make a difference. You keep reminding us all that that difference can save an animal's life. I agree.

Carmen
