My Native American spouse hails from this land
A wondrous place she and I both love and cherish
It has finally been designated a National Monument
And now, it will hopefully be preserved, just as it is
This place is the 240,000 acre El Rio Grande Norte
A place of utter enchantment, in Northern New Mexico
On many a nature and history trek, have we journeyed here
And on many more marvelous excursions here, we hope to go
The El Rio Grande del Norte has been a sacred land, for thousands of years
Ancient petroglyphs abound, near its hot springs bubbling up from the ground
It is Home to mule deer, elk, bighorn sheep, raptors, otters, and cutthroat trout
As part of The Central Migratory Flyway, here wondrous bird species are found
Its vast canyons, volcanic cones, wild rivers, and native grasslands, harbor its wildlife
And unique cave paintings here chronicle its human residents over the past 10,000 years
Truly making this a place well worth saving, for future generations of Americans to come
And now, it can be enjoyed by all without the modern day threat of destruction we feared
Many New Mexicans, Wildlife, and Conservation Groups, have wanted to preserve it
But most of our Congressmen today have been bought off, by special interests groups
Oil, gas, mining, and timber companies all want it fracked, mined, and chopped down
So my spouse and I are both rejoicing today in yesterday’s ‘National Monument’ News

It looks like our petitions are paying off. I also noticed that parts of the area north of the Grand Canyon are no longer under threat of uranium mining.
