The Wondrous Spring Migration,

Has Always Filled Me With Elation

“When I would recreate myself,

I would seek the darkest wood,

The thickest, most impenetrable swamp,

And I would enter them as sacred places,

As Sanctum Sanctorums.”

Henry David Thoreau

Painting by Owen Gromme

There is a place I like to visit

Each and every Spring season

A place, now brimming with life

A place, with purpose and reason

This place is Winnebago Marsh

Home to nearly 300 bird species

Wetlands and birds, are the key

To Earth’s ancient ‘life diversity’

I love watching its wondrous birds

I love listening to it, quietly breathe

I love gazing at sunsets over its water

All of these things, bring serenity to me

This wetland was formed by glaciers

So very many thousands of years ago

A very natural breeding ground, for ‘Life’

A sacred place, Native Americans loved so

Watching its birds swoop in, so splendid

Listening to all its birds sing, so glorious

Marveling at its ancient, natural, majesty

A wondrous God-given gift, for all of us

Earth’s wetlands provide us with fresh water

Earth’s birds bring us joy, in so many ways

Without either, our lives would be very dismal

I hope to wander wetlands, the rest of my days

Your spirit sours in this marshland of life's bounty.

A wake up call to the fragility of such places, given the obsession our society has to decimating any and all land that might represent building profit.

Aw! It sounds like heaven! Thanks for taking us there, Ed! I do pray those wetlands are there for our grandchildren and theirs...

i hope that marsh doesn't go the way
so many other habitats have gone;
i hope you'll be able to wander all your days, Ed,
no one i know deserves more such peace and beauty

And the sandhill wildlife reserve near Pittsville, ain't bad either. That's also why I love Brazos Bend State Park here, near Houston, as well.

I wander where the wetlands went and go where the wild goose goes, for it is only in the primal places where my nose knows and my passion slows to taste the wild and rich lore that has always been, now and before.

You mean man, in his painful decision to expand his domain, has not yet to fill in those wetlands...I see it happening all the time out here, no regard for those species that live there, just fill it in and put houses or something there, that will, eventually just sink anyway...sounds to be a nice place, the Winnebago Marsh...like to see it with you one day...e
