“Bleak, dark, and piercing cold,

It was a night for the well-housed and fed

To draw round the bright fire,

And thank God that they were at home;

And for the homeless starving wretch to lay him down and die.”

Charles Dickens

The rain, it was relentless

As he wandered in the dark

A wretchedly cold, abysmal night

As he trembled there alone in the park

By morning’s light, he was soaked

His hunger and loneliness immense

Then he spotted a woman and a dog

They were walking by the park fence

He soon timidly began hobbling towards them

Now hoping that he had found some new friends

Thankfully, they did not ignore him, as others had

His hellish lonely nightmare, now finally at an end

The woman and the dog brought him to their home

Where he gratefully accepted some warmth and food

Within a few hours, he was already feeling a lot better

Their compassion and kindness had uplifted his mood

And now, we are attempting to figure out how he got here

His microchip indicates he was adopted in Oklahoma City

We do not know if he was stolen, or if his family moved here

But this waif is now no longer soaking wet, terrified, or hungry

And please safeguard your own precious pets

More and more dogs are being stolen for ‘bait’

Vicious dog fighting rings use them for ‘training’

They could care less a gruesome death is their fate

Whenever I read about dog fighting rings, I am filled with the fantasy picture of the dogs finally figuring out that enough is enough and they devour their human captors as bait.
