It’s very hard to believe, that it’s been a year

Since I found Highway, lying on that interstate

Lying there in the hellish heat, with a broken leg

An agonizing death would surely have been his fate

He immediately seemed to know that I would help him out

He hobbled over to me, and let me lift him up into my truck

He kissed my face, and then he contentedly fell fast asleep

Knowing deep in his canine soul, that I had changed his luck

Today, a year later, he is now an immensely happy dog

He is the most content, when he’s in our yard, at my side

Like my other rescued orphans, he now watches over me

He never asks for much, with his unconditional love inside

I’ve never rescued any dog that was not appreciative of love

I’ve never met any dog that did not return the love given to them

I still try to be as good a person as my rescued canines think I am

I have never met one I didn’t like; they are far more loyal than men
