Under A Northwood Moon

Poem Artwork
-->

“The moon like a flower,

In heaven’s high bower,

With silent delight,

Sits and smiles on the night.”

William Blake

There is something quite mesmerizing

About a full moon, up in the northwood

My canines and I are all captivated by it

Observing it over a lovely lake, so good

No city lights out here, to distract us

No artificial noises, produced by man

Just the full moon, smiling down on us

A feeling that to me, is always so grand

Out here, time does not have much relevance

This same full moon, has appeared, for centuries

I picture a man and his dogs, hundreds of years ago

Sitting out here, watching this full moon, just like me

I also now picture him having very similar thoughts to mine

Pondering the fact his ancestors moon-watched in this wood

And soon, I begin to wonder how many distant centuries ago

Marked the first time, man paused right here, feeling this good

And eventually, I now begin to realize that I myself, had first visited here

Gazing up at this Northwood September Full Moon, some fifty years past

And now, I wonder how many humans and their dogs, will come after us

And how many years, this wondrous moon view in the northwood, will last

There is something quite mesmerizing,

About a full moon, up in the northwood;

My canines and I are all captivated by it,

Observing it over this lovely lake, so good.

I have been fortunate to gaze on the moon in the water in the wilderness as well. There's no finer feeling because it brings warmth to the cool night and the feeling of belonging in this, our small universe.
