As I wander yet another frigid alley

In search of another abandoned pet

My thoughts soon turn to my childhood

These Holiday memories are so vivid yet

I can picture the loving home of my grandparents

It was always merrily filled with family and friends

Their cherished pets, so very content, by their sides

All of them safe, snug, and loved, until their very end

Somehow, these sad days, we have lost that cherished bond

Far too many dogs and cats, now being dumped on the streets

Starving and forlorn, no longer having a home of their very own

Instead of our love and our protection, lonely deaths they will meet

Thousands and thousands of them this year, will spend the Holidays

In the cold, wondering what they did to deserve such a miserable fate

The ‘lucky ones’ will be rounded up, and carted off to an animal shelter

Sitting in a tiny cage, so very all alone, with very little hope left, they wait

We are rapidly running out of compassionate people willing to adopt them

Only about one in ten, of today’s ever increasing, left behind dogs and cats

Will be given a second chance at life, and love, and a home to call their own

As I scoop up another abandoned dog, my sorrow deepens at this horrific fact

Please Find Some Room In Your Heart,

For These Orphans Over The Holidays;

Please Adopt Another Pet – Don’t Shop,

They Deserve Far Better From Us, Today.

What Better Gift Could There Be,

In This Season of Giving,

Than The Gift of Love?
