The Christmas Castaway

Poem Artwork
-->“He was abandoned like an empty beer bottle,
A cigarette butt, or a worn-out shoe.”
Dennis Vickers

It was a few days before Christmas
He was spotted in a snow-covered park
Most likely, he had been abandoned there
In the sub-zero weather, all alone in the dark

He was so frightened, so very cold, and so hungry
He was not able to comprehend, what had happened
It was supposed to be The Season of Love and Giving
And now, he was facing an abysmal and terrifying end

When anyone approached him, he would race away in fear
Several times, he had darted out into an extremely busy street
For four days, he wandered aimlessly in the sub-zero weather
Always returning to the park, still hoping his family he would see

I began following him on his lonely, terrifying, treks around the park
And I was finally able to corral him, as he trembled and shook with fear
It took more than an hour in the warmth of my car before he calmed down
It saddened me so that we can disregard and disrespect a being so very dear

He spent the next few days being cared for at the animal hospital
On Christmas Eve, my spouse and I brought him to his new foster home
This lonely, discarded, street orphan is once again being cared for and loved
But I sadly know that I will soon hear about another abandoned soul on the roam

May you be richly blessed with the true adoration and affection offered by each and every one of these many orphans who continue to become your family as you enlarge your heart and your home to receive them in the coming years; it must be a wonderfully happy place and a case of a bad situation being transformed wonderfully into good. xx

Perhaps what is most disheartening about our species' lack of compassion and understanding of love, is that when you get right down to it, your kind of love to animals proves more often than not reciprocal. Try that on most human to human kindness. As often as not, one or the other participant will be suspicious of the other's motive, his or her agenda...and far too many times, he or she is right. We are a culture of "what's in it for me?" dis-ease. Thank you for another eye opening write on such a simple, yet tragic subject.

Dear Ed,

This is a Christmas miracle:

"When anyone approached him, he would race away in fear
Several times, he had darted out into an extremely busy street
For four days, he wandered aimlessly in the sub-zero weather
Always returning to the park, still hoping his family he would see

Yes, it is a miracle that this gut survived.

Perhaps God knew that you and your wife (His Angels) would help this little guy on the most Sacred Day of all, CHRISTMAS!

I know that Christmas was extra special for you because you were able to save this little guy. A good friend has an abandoned little poodle that is the greatest joy in her life (her husband just passed away).

Once again if everyone would take in just one. What a wonderful world this would be for them as well as the pet!

I don't know what I can do for this New Year to make it brighter. It's a passion of mine to help out God's animals so I will pray about it then act on it. You my friend are my affirmation that it will come to pass.

New Years Blessings,
(where does time go?)

John Michael
