As I attempted to rescue numerous street dogs
During the recent Polar Vortex of Forty Below
I also came upon far too many human beings
Also struggling to survive out there in the cold

It both saddened me and angered me
That our societal apathy includes both
So many people simply walk or drive by
The freezing man or dog, out in the cold

Many of these homeless souls are veterans
Many of these homeless dogs had been pets
Both, now kicked to the curbside and ignored
And, I sadly don’t see much help for either yet

Our millionaire politicians are all so completely clueless
As they all enjoyed yet another lengthy vacation in the sun
They underfund veteran programs and ignore animal welfare
Leaving far too many to suffer, before this brutal winter is done
