Poem Artwork
-->“Happiness is not something ready made;
It comes from your own actions.”

Dalai Lama

After finding the frozen lifeless dog on the tracks
I began worrying about all of the other orphans
Especially a tiny street waif I had named ‘Cookie’
Whose horrific life on the streets is finally at an end

Little Cookie has been living on the huge grounds of the county jail
For well over a year, and today, with the Wind Chills of Forty Below
Her mate was killed by a vehicle, soon after leaving her with puppies
And so very sadly, her offspring were taken from her by Animal Control

They really didn’t care very much about rescuing the pups’ mother
I have seen this far too many times, with numerous other street waifs
Cute cuddly puppies are much easier to adopt out, then a dog gone feral
So they leave the mother out there on her own, to face her horrendous fate

But a fellow pet rescuer and I have been determined to rescue Cookie if we could
I spent the entire day yesterday desperately searching for her in the sub-zero chill
My friend found her lying in some bushes last night, unable to move from the cold
She scooped her up, and drove her to safety, and this morning, we are both thrilled

Cookie will now most certainly get to live a much better life
We already have numerous people now willing to adopt her
This morning, we will be heading off to an enormous cemetery
Another street orphan, freezing in Forty Below, resides out there

“Happiness is not something ready made;
It comes from your own actions.”

It's always so wonderful to hear of happy endings ...and you make them happen, Ed. I pray to whoever, or whatever, will listen for a million more with your compassion.
