A Strange But Welcome Spring Sighting

by Mr. Ed — Read all 1,530 poems by Mr. Ed

Poem Artwork
-->“When a homeless man is found in the woods
With his arm and his shoulder chewed off
Just outside Atlantic City on the first day of Spring,
FBI Agent Mulder suspects that it may be the work
Of the Legendary Old Jersey Devil.”

The X-Files, March 1993

The first day of Spring
And what should I see
A sighting of the Jersey Devil
Right here on the board at A.D.

Old Jersey hasn’t been spotted here all winter
Some say that he hibernates like an old bear
Some say he awakens with a taste for blood
So on your Spring hikes, be careful out there

Some say this mysterious old Jersey Devil is ancient
That he has been wandering the Barrens for centuries
Some say that he is as harmless as a furry little kitten
And that he tip toes through the Barrens, quite merrily

I do know that he has been missed here on A.D. by many
Who have been wondering, where the hell he could now be
So Welcome Back, to my devilish old brother with all the fur
This was a strange, but most welcome, Spring Sighting indeed

©The First Day of Spring 2014, His Loving Old Brother Mr. Ed,
Who Remembers Jersey's Fondness For Chewing on Bones;
And His Brand New Spring Posting is Entitled ‘Bear With Me,’
It Appears That In His Cave, The Old Devil Is No Longer Alone!

This is strange for your usual prose postings of saving dogs. Apparently this dog devil you speak of has saved himself. Quite a feat, indeed. I guess I'll have to watch my fingers and toes if I ever camp out in new Joyce E.

Nuthin like a good swift kick in the Groin to wake an old Bear up!
Also, as on St. Pattys Day, for the Finnegans to begin again, with their ancient tribal rituals: Geen Beer, Corned Beef & Cabbage, with Irish Potatoes & Orange Carrots... I did partake of All of these. And in honor of that nasty Jersey Devil, I also imbibed both a Nutty Irishman & an Irish Coffee... what Wonderful Brews!
