Poem Artwork
-->“We are what we think.
All that we are, arises with our thoughts.
And with our thoughts, we make the world.”

Buddha

It had been a long journey, over a week ago
A rescued stray dog, heading to his new home
He was transported a long way, and then panicked
Now, this frightened dog is lost in these woods alone

Several of us have been out in these woods searching
There have been few sightings of this scared lost dog
As I pen this, I am sitting here in these woods right now
Scanning the area with my binoculars, as I perch on a log

The woods are extremely dark this cold spring morning
Soon, I spot an industrious squirrel, foraging in the leaves
Then I spot a tiny chipmunk, and quickly toss him a peanut
These chirpy little forest dwellers always seem to be so happy

Eventually, I hear distant rustling on the leaf-covered ground
I’m hoping that this is the scared lost dog that I hear out there
I zoom in with my binoculars, only to spot a small foraging deer
So I sadly get up and I walk, knowing this dog is here somewhere

Soon, I hear a wise old crow, cawing out in the distance
I head in his direction, hoping he has spotted this lost soul
This crow takes to wing, and heads in a southerly direction
So now I head south through the wood, being led by this crow

Frightened, starving, lost canines, always break my heart
I hope that someone in these woods spots this one very soon
As I head off down the trail, with no confirmed sightings today
I realize that I'm usually happy in the woods, but today I am blue

Wow! It's like having a lost child when you are in Paradise. It's not truly a Paradise if someone you care about has gone astray. A very moving poetic story. Extremely well portrayed!

Let's hope he takes someone into his trust and confidence sometime soon, Ed. If he had been within scenting distance, I'm sure it would have been you. xx

I can see your quandary. In spite of the beautiful sights in the springtime woods, your focus is on a dog that you know cannot last long foraging in unfamiliar territory even with his sharp nose.

My heart is breaking! I hope the dog will be found.

Often, transporting animals to a faraway place where they may already had suffered car or plane sickness, and then meet with total strangers is very scary for the once lost and rescued animals because they lack the feeling of security. Had the new owners come to the rescue center to get to know the animals first before the adoption this may help the animals' insecurity.
