“The best place to seek God,
Is in a garden.
You can dig for Him there.”

George Bernard Shaw

Each and every glorious new springtime
As I prepare my new garden of vegetables
I always plant an abundance of chile peppers
These ancient spices of life always thrill me so

Ancient Native Americans were cultivating them
In their crop fields, well over 6,000 long years ago
Yet, the peoples of Europe didn’t get to enjoy them
Until Columbus brought them back just 500 years ago

I plant many different varieties of chile peppers today
And my wife and I truly enjoy them, in a variety of ways
We dice them up in our soups, stews, egg dishes, and salads
These very ancient spices of life, spice up our lives every day

My spouse prefers the milder varieties
For me, I love them so extra zesty and hot
My dear old grandmother grew the very best
And I have loved all of them, since I was a tot

These marvelous peppers are also a very natural source
Of a very much needed Nutrient of Life – Vitamin C
The wonders and glories of God’s abundant Creation
Have always managed to spice up daily living for me

And, of course, I grow them, the old fashioned way
No very noxious toxic pesticides or herbicides for me
One has simply not lived until they have tasted ‘organic’
A naturally delicious tomato or chile pepper is Heavenly

And there is nothing quite like,
Dancing around your own garden,
With your spouse and your dogs,
Listening to Kool & The Gang
Belting Out – Too Hot!

Think Joni Mitchell was definitely talking about you as well when she wrote Woodstock and the lines about 'got to get ourselves back to the garden'! :) Definitely a spot of "taste and see that the Lord is good" goin down here. xx

So lovely that you enjoy the spices , come to India to feel how hot we eat our curries, not in the hotels but in homes... we do have our eyes watering and head s burning but we end it up with a cool desert but our red spices we enjoy Jk

Yes, oh yes. One's garden is perhaps the only "single payer" hope we've got for our health care. Nothing like caring for oneself and getting your hands dirty, eh?

I will just have to remember not to eat your stews, soup & egg dishes in the future...also I hope you are not dancing around in the nude to Kool & his gang...Ma says you always loved to dance in the nude as you were growing up too...:-) e

I like them all. You should try soaking habanaro peppers in your favorite bottle of tequila for 24 hours. Makes a very tasty very spicy margarita.

I didn't grow up with peppers. I can take them or leave them, except the very hot ones tend to make my mouth and tongue numb, losing all taste, something I have in abundance. You managed to get your dogs in at the end. Can't seem to leave that subject behind…

My kind of song for Chicago: "Hot down, summer in the city, back a my neck, gittin' dirty and gritty."

I'm a pepper,
you're a pepper.
Wouldn't you like to be a pepper too.

Nice. There are so many ways that we can use pepper on our food, I always have to have peppers whenever I eat noodles, otherwise the noodles won't taste the same. Great post, Ed!!
