“Dog! When we first met on the highway of life,
We came from the two poles of creation.
What can be the meaning of the obscure love for me
That has sprung up in your heart?”
Anatole France
He waits out there, each and every morning
For me to join him, out on the patio chairs
He refuses to come back inside, until I do
No matter what, he just sits there and stares
So now I let my other dogs back in the door
And I join him, for our early morning meet
Then he grabs his favorite tattered old toy
And he ceremoniously drops it at my feet
I pick it up, and I toss it out into the backyard
He now races off to retrieve it, as fast as he can
Then he jumps back into his chair, and he smiles
Now satisfied, that I have followed his morning plan
And now, he curls up in his chair, with a huge grin on his face
Now content, that the two of us have begun another day together
I now sit there petting him, and telling him what a good dog he is
He simply loves our early morning ritual, even in inclement weather
And today, I often wonder how he came up with this canine ritual of his
Perhaps he remembers how I found him lying on the side of that highway
Although riddled with pain from his broken leg, he smiled that day as well
Eventually, he kisses my face, and we head inside, both of us content today
