Music: A Whole New World


It will soon be the big weekend, once again
When my spouse now joins the canines and I
For ‘The Great American Backyard Campout’
As we all perch around a campfire under the sky

Normally these days, when I camp out in the wild
I camp out alone, or I take along a few of my dogs
But my pampered spouse loves this backyard camping
She doesn’t have to ‘rough it,’ far from home, on a log

(She enjoys wilderness resorts, log cabins, and houseboats;
And I enjoy the ‘no frills - back to basics’ camping the most)

This Backyard Camping Event is also a great way to get kids interested
Kids, who today, spend far too much time, away from nature’s wonders
Nature lovers like myself, are extremely saddened, by today’s destruction
And we know, unless more kids start finding nature, it will be torn asunder

So today I’m extremely grateful that The Great American Backyard Campout exists
And I truly hope that you will consider participating in this night out under the stars
My spouse looks forward to this yearly experience, as do several kids that we know

Many of us today believe that we need to give back to modern day children what they don’t even know that they have now so very sadly lost - a connection to our natural world. And, a great way to start is by having your own family participate in the The Great American Backyard Campout on Saturday, June 28th. National Wildlife Federation’s yearly national backyard camping event encourages parents and children alike to trade their screen time, for some much needed ‘green time.’

In the last two decades, childhood has literally moved indoors, with today’s kids now spending more than seven hours per day in front of their electronic media devices. The average American child now spends just four to seven minutes outside in unstructured play each day – an extremely sad reversal from my marvelous childhood when I spent most of my time outdoors.

This yearly campout under the stars also helps today’s children understand why some of us still refer to it as ‘The GREAT OUTDOORS.’ As part of National Wildlife Federation’s ‘Be Out There’ movement, The Great American Backyard Campout lets kids explore a whole new world right in their own backyards with family and friends, or with other nature lovers at a community camping event. For those looking to camp beyond their own backyards, their website also helps you locate organized Campouts all across the country.

If you register your participation, you will also get helpful information to make your backyard camping experience a truly enjoyable one - including camping recipes, nocturnal wildlife guides, campfire songs and games, nature activities, and much more.

The National Wildlife Federation, and nature lovers like myself, hope to inspire far more American citizens, especially our young children, to once again re-connect with nature, and to once again start protecting and preserving it, and our ever vanishing wildlife, for future generations of Americans, not yet even born.
