Wandering Woodlands

Poem Artwork
-->-Looking Forward To Fall-

“It is not so much for its beauty,
That the forest makes a claim upon men’s hearts,
As for that subtle something,
That quality of air,
That emanation from old trees,
That so wonderfully changes and renews a weary spirit.”

Robert Louis Stevenson

I have loved wandering these woodlands
Ever since I was an extremely young boy
I can think of no place, I would rather be
The great northern forests, fill me with joy

I especially love wandering the woodlands
In the crisp, colorful, early autumn afternoons
The cascading leaves crunch beneath my boots
As the forest songbirds sing such colorful tunes

My dogs seem just as thrilled as I always am
As we follow an ancient trail, down to a stream
Where we often spot a rabbit or a white-tail deer
As we gaze at the wondrous colors of the trees

I only wish that my sense of smell was like theirs
They seem to delight in every tiny woodland scent
And soon, they gaze very knowingly down the trail
Instinctively sensing, where every forest dweller went

And after we grow tired wandering the great woodland
We’ll often stop and perch by a very colorful lakeshore
The crisp, clean, autumnal air here, now filling our lungs
The serene silence and wonder here, something we adore

Others can have congested, noisy, modern day cities and towns
My canines and I prefer the utter serenity of the great woodland
And, I hope that I can wander here, for all of my remaining days
Wandering woodlands, to me, is a pastime, so magnificently grand

Wandering through "your" northern woodlands keeps your wife happy...she has alot more time to breath fresh air rather than smelling you and your mutts...-e-

Yes, excellent poetic description of a place so very special.
Even in Brooklyn NY as I kid I wandered through woods of empty lots.
These lots are now paved with rows of homes with little trees planted around them. There are beautiful pines in SW Florida, some are canopied bike trails but nothing like up north or out west. We used to go to Aspen Colorado and we still go from time to time and since it's so far away it becomes an exceptional treat.

It's so hard to find autumn here on the Gulf Coast. And it takes miles and miles of driving to reach a place of forested serenity. So I guess I'll have to wander the woodlands through your poetry and my memory from here on out.

Absolutely love the rhyme and rhythm of this piece. The images you paint are amazing. For some reason, I have written several Autumn- based poems. I live along the Rocky Mountain Front and you certainly took me back into the woods....

When I lived in Boston I would take to the White Mountains every wk-end and indulge my senses with the rich forestry, as you do here, before reaching tree line and the rockier areas for climbing. Yes indeed. There is nothing quite like the autumn color when one is immersed in its natural intoxication.

We are so lucky that we still have such spaces to wander. England, being such a small island with such a large population, is fast disappearing under millions of tons of concrete - So sad :-(
