Going Batty

Poem Artwork
-->“A bat is beautifully soft and silky; I do not know any creature that is pleasanter to the touch
Or is more grateful for caressings, if offered in the right spirit. I know all about them,
because our great cave, three miles below Hannibal, was multitudinously stocked with them,
And I often brought them home to amuse my mother with.”

Mark Twain

I just built a new Bat Box
Hung on a tree, in my yard
It was the least that I could do
And, it was not extremely hard

I have been fascinated by bats
Ever since I was a very young child
I’d watch them in our old church belfry
And they would always make me smile

As I got older, on my nature explorations
I would seek out caves, inhabited by bats
I also liked to camp out, in red rock canyons
Watching bats emerge at dark, captivated I sat

And there is a bridge down in Austin, Texas
That I would often travel to, just to see them
But very sadly, just like our honeybees today
Far too many bats are dying, coming to an end

Bats, like every other living creature, have a purpose
Theirs is to eat harmful insects, like pesky mosquitoes
Every bat can consume hundreds of them, in one night
They will be greatly missed, if these winged wonders go

We are destroying far too much of wildlife habitat today
Because of our arrogance, our children will pay the price
Building a bat box in my backyard, was just a small gesture
But what a wondrous sight, as they emerge from it each night

Well said! Humans are arrogant about the Earth and its creatures great and small. If you remind a single person to help a single animal or species, you have done more than all the politicians and their grandiose verbosity could manage in a lifetime. Applause to Mr. Ed.

Very good. I would love to put up a bat box, but my wife won't let me. At least not yet. I keep asking.

You're so right about our negligence in protecting the endangered species. Thought you might enjoy this blog. Fascinating video of whales.

ENJOYED the read! Bats are great!

I found that I needed 2 houses, the kids and ladies in one and the gents in the other when I hung my house(s) out at the barn.

I too like spiders as does John Domino, my argiopes are busy hanging egg sacs for next years yard girls, they were everywhere this summer.

Agnes, my little orb weaver on the front porch has managed to remain alive in our chilling weather. I will miss her when it gets really cold.

I loved you poem and what it stands for! Bats eat bugs and things that bite us like crazy. Keeping that population down will not make me frown. I lived in Austin Texas for four years. There I caught my first bass cooked on a campfire which helps keep the bugs away from the catch of the day. Today I live in Florida and my swimming pool is screened. I have dozens of spiders making webs in the screen corners but we let them live. They make a meal out of those no-see-ums. So we thank the Lord for bats and spiders! Thank you for your wisdom Mr.Ed!
