About Twenty Inches of Snow

Poem Artwork
-->Music: Sixteen Tons,
Tennessee Ernie Ford

Some people say we Chicagoans are all nuts
We’re poor men, made outta muscle and guts
Muscle, and guts, and thick skin, and bones
A mind that's weak, and a back that's strong

You shovel about ten inches, and what do you get
Well, another ten inches, and you ain’t done yet
Saint Peter, don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I Gotta Get Out There, and Shovel More Snow!

I was born one mornin' when the snow was a comin down
I picked up a shovel, crawled outside, and looked all around
Then I soon began a shovelin, ten inches of cold wet snow
And my dear old Ma soon shouted "Well, a-bless my soul!"

You shovel about ten inches, and what do you get
Why another ten inches, and you ain’t done yet
Saint Peter, don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I Gotta Get Out There, and Shovel More Snow!

If you see me a comin' with my shovel, you better step aside
With one smack of my shovel in your face, you just might die
One arm is made of iron, the other one made of steel
If the right one don't a-get you, then the left one will

You shovel about ten inches, and what do you get
Why another ten inches, and you ain’t done yet
Saint Peter, don't you call me 'cause I can't go
I Gotta Get Out There, and Shovel More Snow!

And when I’m finally done today, shovelin all of this snow,
For a nice little dip in frozen Lake Michigan, I’m a gonna go

That's why I moved to the sub tropics of the south while
chi town can resume it winter wonderland
coming from the Northeast I know what shoveling snow is all about
It spells back pains cold hands and frozen feet.....
those chores are all still there...only I'm not
Peace be with you

A great tribute to Chicago grit and Tennessee Ernie Ford. So glad my snow shoveling days are over. After your dog days are over, you may just die shoveling like so many before.

Really brilliant work on this piece and variation on the song chosen. But, I am certainly glad to live in California

...so far we've gotten about an inch,
Sooner or later we will get a larger amount thats a cinch,
More next time that I can make a snowball with as all we've had so far is only enough to pinch...-e-

Great tune Ed! Humans go out shovel snow get in their cars and then go inside. What are pets made of? How do they survive? Just think if we could train Fido to shovel snow or betty the cat to paw it from our driveway. Thin about that. If someone could train them everyone would want one but...for the wrong reasons. Until then shovel on... God bless you! Big John
