“It’s the great, big, broad land ’way up yonder,
It’s the forests where the silence has lease;
It’s the beauty that thrills me with wonder,
It’s the stillness, that fills me with peace.”

Robert W. Service,
The Spell of the Yukon

Music: Visions

I was now hiking in the wilderness
Up in the snowy peaks of the Yukon
When She-Wolf met a male Pit Bull
And now, the confrontation was on

The She-Wolf growled at the Dog
The Dog stood there, in the snow
Would there now be an epic battle
As I watched, I really did not know

After the loud growl, came a challenging howl
But this was from the Dog, not the She-Beast
And soon, the Dog and Wolf were entangled
Now rolling and tumbling, what a sight to see

Then my spouse yelled out ‘Who’s Winning?’
And suddenly, I remembered where we were
This was not the wilderness, but our backyard
Wolf and Dog wrestling, my memories still a stir

Our backyard had been transformed into wilderness
With 20 inches of fresh snow, covering the ground
But my mind was still up in those snowy mountains
I traveled there twice, and such beauty I had found

Eventually, this snow wrestling match was over
She-Wolf Carrie had once again beaten Highway
Sometimes, I think he lets her win these matches
The members of my Pack, entertain me every day

And I would love to live up in those snowy mountains,
As would my Pack, but my city-spoiled spouse won’t go

Wonderful. Seeing the rough and tumble nature of dog and wolf as natural, as giving you a gift, an experience transforming you into the mountain settings, well...that my friend, is magic.

A daydream drama carried out in your backyard! Reading this brought back memories of the old movie I saw, Call of the Wild, by Jack London where a fighting dog that appeared to be a St. Bernard broke free and joined a wolf pack. It was a very sad movie for what that dog went through.

Nice wishful thinking though. Kind of like your pipe dream of living in the Yukon that your wife will not cotton to. I know the feeling…

Pack up the pack,
and head for the hills.
Tell your wife it could be Green Acres,
that should give her the chills.

A vivid scene, quite a pair, that misunderstood part of your pack. And I like that you remembered Robert Service.
