Poem Artwork
-->“Bad weather like blizzards and ice storms can make it very difficult to find food,
And the frigid cold can take a heavy toll on them.”

Sally Roth, Author of The Backyard Bird Feeder’s Bible

Music: Color of The Wind

I step out into my frozen yard at dawn
And there they both are, singing to me
My resident pair of gorgeous Cardinals
Always together, out here in my icy trees

For their lovely dawn concert, I now feed them
Some berries, and sunflower, and thistle seeds
They are cold, and hungry, and they need food
Helping the birds in winter, is always a joy for me

Besides being ‘Pet Spay and Neuter Month’
February is also ‘National Bird Feeding Month’
Our wondrous wild birds need our help in winter
And helping them to survive it, doesn’t take much

I can’t imagine our planet, without the wild birds on it
Yet, so many bird species, are suffering losses today
Please do what you can, to help them survive February
If you do, a choir of newborns will sing to you come May

February 2015, Mr. Ed

How vivid cardinals are against the white of winter! You can never forget to support them. We get very excited about our over-wintering species over here but mercifully for them we've hardly had a 'winter' to speak of so natural foods are still plentiful and readily available. I'm increasingly aware and fond of the wonder that is our world's beautiful birds. xx

Beautiful the song of Cardinals...Beautifully penned with
music to sooth the heart. Love feeding the birds and listen
for their canter.

We have a pair of resident mockingbirds, cardinals, bluejays, and mourning doves. When she puts the birdseed out every morning, about forty sparrows arrive and attack the seed until it's gone about two hours later. One dove has come by to drive away the sparrows occasionally and always drive away another dove because they seem to be rivals. The cardinals occasionally come by a bit after the sparrows are gone, picking out leftovers. The mockingbirds and bluejays don't seem to be interested in the birdseed at all.

A squirrel is… But we fixed that with a hanging bird feeder that it can't get at.

I feed the birds.
I feed the squirrels.
I watch them eat,
and joy unfurls.
