Mardi Gras Tuesday
Shrove Tuesday
Pancake Day in England
And Fettisdagen In Sweden
It’s the last day of indulgence
Before Lent begins tomorrow
In earlier times
People would eat
All the meat, sugar
Milk, and eggs
In their homes
On Fat Tuesday
Since all of these
Were ‘Off Limits’
During Lent
And throwing them out
Would be extremely sinful
In pre-Christian times
Many Europeans held
Bacchus Celebrations
To Welcome in Spring
He was the god of wine
In my Polish culture
Today is known as
‘Paczki Day’
(Pronounced – Poonchkee)
These deep fried donuts
Filled with a wide variety
Of truly tantalizing ingredients
Including custard, cheese, apricot,
Raspberry, blueberry, and strawberry
Are absolutely delicious
We order them from bakeries
Weeks ahead of ‘Paczki Day’
But I have to be on guard today
Or one of my crafty cats
Or one of my Beasty Boys
(Or even my non-Polish wife!)
Will steal and gobble them all

On the other hand, from a very young age, my mother made donuts, of either the solid kind, or raised. She didn't stuff them with berries, but they were scrumptious, nonetheless. And we didn't have to have some religious holiday to enjoy them. We ate them whenever she made them. Now that's a tradition to remember! And it doesn't require going down to some shop and engaging in conspicuous consumption.
