Music: Nature’s Lament


‘Earth Day’ and no reason to celebrate
It was first conceived, way back in 1970
To promote the better health of our planet
But today, we should not be filled with glee

It seems we have forgotten all about our commitment
Political and Corporate Greed, are very much in style
Forty five years, after most of us pledged to do more
We are failing miserably - and none of us should smile

Every year, more of our forests are being decimated
More and more animal species are becoming extinct
Our Pollution is causing toxic, oceanic ‘Dead Zones’
Our Mountaintop Mining has ecosystems on the brink

We continue to trash Earth’s oceans, lakes, and streams
We condone the killing of wolves, by snipers up in the sky
We have declared war on beings that compete for ‘our fish’
Most human beings have given up, and now, don’t even try

We use more cancer-causing pesticides on our food crops
We let special interest groups kill wild horses and buffalo
We build shopping malls and subdivisions on marsh lands
Leaving our wildlife and waterfowl with no places left to go

Yearly, coal processing plants spew 50 tons of mercury
Bats, and birds, and honeybees, are now dying in mass
We do not have very much time left, to mend our ways
If we hope to leave a planet to our children, that will last

Our ‘leaders’ seem much more concerned with special interest gifts
Concerning our environment, the majority today, don’t give a damn
Forty five years ago, so many of us had vowed to improve our world
But soon, it will be too late to save it, because we refuse to take a stand
