Poem Artwork
-->It's 5 AM, Two Days Before the Fourth,
And Some Idiots Are Shooting Off Fireworks, Right Now

The Worst Time of The Year,
For Many Vets and Many Pets

-My Own Pets Are Already Traumatized-

It’s supposed to be an observance
Of our country’s independence
Instead, it’s become a nightmare
For many veterans and many pets

People today, are just not satisfied
With the Official Fireworks Displays
Which usually last just about an hour
They have to shoot their own, for days

Many of my own neighbors spend thousands of dollars
Buying illegal fireworks, and shooting them, night and day
They now launch booming rockets and mortars, everywhere
Not caring at all about the trauma and anxiety they cause today

Many of our valiant combat veterans now suffer from PTSD
Many of our pets tremble in fear, or run away, and become lost
When a vet or a pet owner asks someone to curtail their fireworks
They are ignored or ridiculed, and the fireworks continue to be tossed

Our politicians and our police departments ignore most of our fireworks complaints
None of them seem to care very much at all about our valiant veterans, or our pets
I for one long for the good old days when the hour long fireworks shows were enough
I think it’s a damned shame that many people today have very little empathy or respect

©Mr. Ed, One Who Now Absolutely Hates The Fourth of July,
As Do My Dogs, and Cats, and Many of Our Combat Veterans

Last night as we were going to bed, I heard a barrage of gunshots. Looking out the window, they were aerial bombs going off. Fortunately, it only happened once, and we were able to get some sleep.

I'm often reminded of the scene from Apocalypse Now, where they had gone up river and reached what appeared to be a bridge or a dam that was under attack by the VC. It looked exactly like a fireworks show. I can see why veterans would find neighborhood fireworks disconcerting. As for dogs and cats. They can hear better than us, in ranges we can't hear. Maybe those that set off illegal fireworks for fun and irritating their neighbors could be given dog's hearing and see how they would take that.

Well said. The 4th of July is just another American tradition that has gone way overboard. Any excuse to party. Our lastr dog was terrified of the booms, and so We came to hate That holiday as well. And i might add, I've been guilty of this myself. Your poem is an excellent message for everyone.

spot on re combat vets & pets, timely, needed, ignored in our area where the bop pow has been firing up for several days

to the distress of the old Nam vet who shares my life, and the critters who do the same

Human nature has become incredibly selfish and sociopathic. So few care anymore for others, animal or human, so long as they are having a good time. At times like this I can't afford to think too much. There are too many poor, frightened animals that I can't do anything to help. It makes me so sad!
