Yet Another 'Holiday of Terror' for Them

by Mr. Ed — Read all 1,530 poems by Mr. Ed

I Now Hate The So Called Fourth of July Holiday Because In My Area, The Atrocious Fireworks Now Go On and On and On, For Weeks

Friday, July 1, 2016

Poem Artwork
They all now cower and tremble down in my basement
As they hear yet another loud blast of fireworks overhead
They say that a dog’s hearing is 100 times stronger than ours
And it breaks my heart, that this ‘Holiday’ fills them with dread

They also say that over 40 percent of all canines have ‘Noise Anxiety’
And very sadly, many of my dogs have it, because they are street orphans
They have been out there, during hurricanes, thunderstorms, and fireworks
So their Noise Anxiety is intensified, and very sadly to me, it will never end

And my heart also now breaks each and every year, for all of the animals still outside
I can’t even imagine the terror they are experiencing right now; there is nowhere to hide

Each and every year now, I see far too many animals out there, running everywhere in fear
Yet, so many humans are out there having a ‘blast’ while I look at my dogs, and I shed a tear

After each and every window rattling blast, my dogs look at me, hoping I can make it go away
They run over to me; they tremble uncontrollably; I try to comfort them; we wait for light of day

The dogs who suffer the most in my home from Noise Anxiety are my two Hurricane Katrina Survivors Junior and Tater, who endured a hell that I cannot even imagine in that hellish storm;
my Shadow Boy who was feral, and who lived his entire life outdoors until he was finally rescued; and of course, Little Lupita, who I found panic stricken and completely traumatized cowering behind a garbage can in an alley the day after The Fourth of July several years ago.

I will never look at a fireworks' display in the same way. Animals must feel like they're lost in enemy territory.

I agree , fireworks are frighting and upsetting to many pets. They tremble and hide. Not many humans are aware of their fear! Great write!!!!M

This poem changed the way I think of dogs; I never thought of how they experience noise before! Thanks for taking the time to communicate using one of my favorite media, the poet. You have a real heart for the sensitive and forgotten- may the Lord bless you.

The fireworks started July 1 here. My dogs hate it. I turn the air conditioner fan on high but they still howl. Poor babies. I really wish no one had ever started celebrating anything with fireworks!

I'm so sorry for your & all dogs who have to suffer through fireworks season. I have never found it interesting to fire off those things and to be honest never found it appealing to watch fireworks, just wasn't something I enjoyed...-e-

Mr. Ed ~
A loss of heart these people who don't consider precious
animals. Hugs to the Beasty Boys and Kitties!

I must admit that I've never known a dog with noise anxiety. But I've spent most of my life without dogs so I'm just not knowledgeable like you.

My uncle once told the story about an expensive Airedale hunting dog that he purchased. While training him, he took the young dog out in the country and fired a shot with his shotgun. The dog ran off and he was never able to find him. I guess he became one of those homeless street dogs back then. He probably got adopted by some farmer, joining other farmyard dogs.

Sad but true. When people party, they never stop to think.
