All Lined Up In Rows Of Three

by J. Allen Wilson — Read all 1,629 poems by J. Allen Wilson

The above image can be viewed in several ways. While I abhor the commercialism of these type photos and feel much sorrow for the family of the fallen, I also feel that to restrict or censor is an injustice. I also must say that I shall always support the endeavors of freedom. I know all to well that often freedom comes with a price, it is my prayer that an alternative to war can be found.

Poem Artwork

From dusk to dawn, another hundred are gone,

filling the spiteful generals with a somber hush.

For pitched are they with a burning fever of wars evil lust.

Flag draped boxes now start to arrive, all in rows of three,

with planeload after planeload, as far as the eye can see.

Memories soon flood my mind of another grievous time.

A time when, way back then, other young boys {my friends)

All came home lined up in rows of three, with flags covering each box.

I often wonder the what if’s of if they had lived,

what would they, or could they to society give?

Would Daniel, {my best friend} be the engineer that he had always wanted to be?

Or would Harrison gone on to be the preacher of the word…that set men free?

And what if they had been me, and I was still forever eternally eighteen?

Yet now is another day, and today another time,

But still the echoes of past politicians fill my mind.

For their very words fall from the lips of those that lead today,

It’s the same old song, but sung and played in a different way.

So now I stand here in sorrows dim path,

For I have no answers to the questions, I ask.

So for now I will just let it be,

But if one must know…. its is peace that I truly seek.

Excellent, stirring poem, Allen. All the more powerful coming from someone who lived it before. Thanks for having the courage to write this one, Dawn

Heartbreaking, my friend..
You penned this well, Allen...
Your compassionate heart gave
life to this tragic event.

Allen, A Dear Dear Friend of mine and myself had this very conversation just a day or two ago, how when he sees the Flag draped coffins, it's Freedom he sees.
I tend to believe that there isn't a one that fills those boxes that didn't understand completely the price that either them or others would pay.
I feel a deep sadness for their families and friends, but at the same time I feel so deeply grateful that they were willing to risk all they did.
They are our Heroes. They are what makes America what it is. Without all those just like them all those times before, there would be no America, we would be no different than any other place around the globe. To pull back and watch that happen to us, would be letting them and all those from ages past die in vain...
I'm not willing to do that, and niether were those that now lay beneath 'Ol Glory.
A wonderful tribute Allen..it says so much more than most could ever say. Thank You! Lisa

I have tears, this has touched me deeply, Allen. Your words are most moving and saddening, as is the picture...I pray for a warless world, I pray for peace.

A most poignant, noteworthy write!

Love, Sheila

Nice tribute. As long as man is on the planet, and petty terrorists willing to kill and maim saying "Allah made them do it" there will always be war. God's having a heart attack.

Eloquently said Allen! I agree, knowing that war
is inevitable after an attack takes place, still
we must always seek peace! Seeing the coffins is both
painful and necessary. I Too, lost friends and family
in Nam.
